Miracle in Mapleton Dinner April 9, 2012
Mapleton has come along way since April 9 though the help of
neighbors, family and friends, volunteers and hard work over the
last year.
Come celebrate our progress together
as a community
Miracle in Mapleton Dinner
Monday, April 9, 2012 • Starting 6 PM
Doors Open at 5:30 p.m. • MVAO High School
6 p.m. Welcome
Opening Speech/Prayer
Performance by MVAO Jazz Choir
6:15 p.m. Dinner which includes
Soup (provided by the American Legion), Sandwiches,
Salads, Dessert and Drink--Free Will Donation
Door Prizes will be drawn during the Dinner
7 p.m. Miracle in Mapleton Program
Featuring speeches by local community leaders/volunteers
and Sildeshow of Rebuilding Mapleton
8 p.m. Dance Performance, Auction of Quilt
Performance by Lindsey Lee's Dance Studio and
Auction of the Mapleton Retail Committee’s Miracle in Mapleton
T-Shirt Quilt
Sign Up for DOOR PRIZES Must be present to win
Profits from the free will donation meal will be divided between
God’s Little House.
Mapleton Fire Department for two new sirens and the Special Events
Committee.
Profits from the T-Shirt Quilt go to the Mapleton Retail Committee.
The Mission of the Rebuild and Recover Mapleton (Long Term Recovery)
Board is to progress toward restoring quality of life for the
residents of Mapleton by rebuilding infrastructure, revitalizing
public services, social services and networks so that economic
viability, environmental sustainability and resilience against
future hazards can be reestablished.
PURPOSE:
- Coordinate identified stated needs of the community.
- Provide long-term assistance to individuals affected by the April 9,
2011 tornado.
- Cooperate with the faith community in volunteer rebuilding efforts.
Provide cooperation and coordination with governmental and voluntary
organizations active in recovery efforts.
STRUCTURE:
A Member Board which includes sub groups of: 1) Finance
Representatives 2) City Council and City Staff Representatives 3)
Volunteer Coordinators 4) Site and Construction Coordinators 5)
Clergy Representatives 6) MVAO Representatives and included are many
who received major damage as a result of the tornado. Marie Whiteing
will act as the R & R Board Coordinator .
PROCESS:
Through discussion, problem solving and sharing options and
resources, the Board will jointly work together to solve the unmet
needs caused by the tornado.
If cases are brought to the R & R Board, confidential information
forms will be signed.
Identify and educate ourselves and the community regarding all
disaster related resources.

Mapleton Fund Established
For Recovery Efforts in Mapleton
At approximately 7:15 p.m. on Saturday evening April 9th, a tornado
hit the rural community of Mapleton, IA. It is estimated that 120 of
the 650 plus homes were destroyed and at least a dozen businesses
sustained extensive damage.
As a result of the devastation, many Mapleton residents have been
displaced and are in need of help as they try to rebuild their lives
and their homes.
A special fund has been established through "Rebuild and Recover
Mapleton" committee.

Volunteer
Over 8200 man hours have been logged and donated to the recovery effort in Mapleton, Iowa. Listed below is a outline of the type of support that was provide by the volunteers.
Each of the projects listed below were the result of as few
as 1 to as many as 122 individuals spending 1 to 50 days in
the community helping us. THANK YOU!
- Built a garage, put up fence, built decks, cleaned up lots, put up a ceiling in a business
- Built decks, cleaned up lots, painted houses, landscaping on a house
- Cleaned the Laundromat, painted a house, cleaned up in the park
- Built decks, put a roof on a house, cleaned lots, painted a garage
- Brought $3,000.00 of perennial plants and helped people plant them
- Conducted camp for kids who had been through the tornado
- Stripped the Community Center floor and donated 4 coats of sealer to reseal the floor
- Worked on a roof of a house, cleaned up lots
- Set up bunk beds in Arlington Hotel
- Assisted with building a roof, cleaned up houses, painted the picnic tables in the park
- Painted a house, put up a shed, cleaned the lumber yard lot
- Roofed a house, built a fence
- Painted picnic tables in the park, painted a garage, installed sheet rock in a house
- Built a garage, cleaned a new house for move in
- Tore down bunk beds at the Arlington, and cleaned up the Arlington
- Built a garage, rebuilt two porches, put up a garage ceiling
- Sealed windows , installed new doors, sided a house,
- Rebuilt the gazebo
- Rebuilt gazebo, installed dry wall, taped and mudded, built fences, built decks, assisted with 2 new roofs,
- Clean up, taking down houses, hauling debris and cleaning up concrete.
THE PROGRESS IS VERY GOOD, WE STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO!
